George Washington's Birthday

Washington’s Birthday

Originally implemented by an Act of Congress in 1879 for  government offices in Washington DC and expanded in 1855 to include all federal  offices, the federal holiday honoring, George Washington’s Birthday was started. The holiday was originally celebrated on Washington’s actual birthday, February 22.
In 1951 the first attempt was made to create a generic Presidents Day with the forming of the “President’s Day National Committee”. The purpose was not to honor one President in particular but rather the office of the Presidency. March 4th, the original inauguration day, was first considered to be called Presidents Day.  However, it was stalled in the Senate Judiciary Committee.
An early draft of the Uniform Monday Holiday Act would have renamed the holiday “President’s Day” to honor both Washington and Lincoln, but the proposal failed in committee. The bill was voted on and signed into law in  June of 1968 and kept as Washington’s Birthday.
The federal holiday was shifted to the third Monday in February by the Uniform Monday Holiday Act on January 1, 1971.
The term “President’s Day”  began its public appearance by the mid-1980’s.
Washington’s 275th birthday was celebrated by the nation in 2007.
Since 1862 the United States Senate has read George Washington’s  Farewell Address on his birthday.

My Valentine's Day

Valentine's Day

Here is a glimpse into my "Valentine's Week".

I started off with making decorations for the party I helped to plan and host.
I made my own Valentine's to give at the party and as I saw my family and friends.
"You're just WRITE for me"

"You make my heart GLOW."

Decorations included home made buntings, signs, and egg carton flowers! Plus a few fun things I had at home!!

Bunting made from paper, stamps, and yarn...

My Dad planned an early Valentine's  dinner for my Mom and the rest of us because he was going to be gone.

Wedding Shower Part 7

Coffee Bar

We've had rain here in California lately, so a coffee bar was just perfect at the wedding shower!

My mom loves to make things look pretty and we really enjoy working on things like this together, so we brain stormed, researched ideas on Pinterest, looked through our things at home, and went shopping!!

For starters we put a white sheet down; clean, pretty, and easy to clean up.
We then added a short strand of white lights and put sparkly tulle around it for a "wedding effect".

We served

Gevalia Kaffe
Decaf House Blend,

Peet’s Coffee
Gaia Organic Blend
Deep Roast,

water with lemon, and had hot water for tea, hot cocoa, and apple cider.

Teas were displayed in a jewelry box; see bottom right of above photo.
Hot cocoa and cider packets were placed in a basket, see left middle, just behind the tray of coffee cups.
Marshmallows, chocolates, sprinkles, honey, and lemons were a few of the other extras available for the guests.

The metal bucket (center of above photo) held ice to keep the milk bottle cold, the plastic "ice holders" later had various coffee creamers in them, and the shakers (at the bottom of the photo) had spices, cocoa, etc. in them to jazz up the coffee!!

Mom and I had a wonderful time planning this together and setting it up!!

Our prayer is that it will be a treasured memory for Kady and Silas when they look back at their engagement!

We love you both!!

The photos below give a fun look into the rest of the day!
Enjoy!

Wedding Shower Part 6

Coffee Bar Sign

My mom planned the coffee bar for the shower last Saturday.
One very cute thing we did was a coffee bar sign that told everyone what the Bride and Groom's choice creamers are!

It started with a frame we bought....

From there I hot glued some hearts, coffee beans, lace, flowers, and "i love you" ribbon on it.

Then I typed up the "Love is Brewing" sign on my computer.

Love is Brewing!

And here it is!

Did I say Coffee Bar? Yes!
Look for the next post to reveal the lovely details!!
